Track and Field Concludes Day One of 2011 America East Outdoor Championships at UMBC Stadium

BALTIMORE—The UMBC track and field finished the first day of competition at the 2011 America East Outdoor Championships Saturday at UMBC Stadium, breaking two school records in the process. The men sit in sixth place with 15.5 points, while the women are ninth without a point scored as of yet.


Junior Imani Colbert (Upper Marlboro, Md./C.H. Flowers) qualified for the finals in the women's 100-meter hurdles, breaking her own UMBC record in an ECAC-qualifying time of 14.09.


Sophomore Chowan Brightful (New Market, Md./Linganore) sits in second place in the women's heptathlon after four events with 2,909 points. She broke the school record in the high jump portion, hitting a mark of 1.65m (5'5").


Senior Keith Onto (Point Pleasant, N.J./Point Pleasant Boro/St. Francis (PA)) is currently in third in the men's decathlon with 3,472 points, while fellow senior Dominic Devaud(Baltimore, Md./Archbishop Curley) is right behind with 3,403 points. Devaud won the 400-meter dash portion in 50.93.


In the men's pole vault, senior Martin Nevarez (Casa Grande, Ariz./Central Arizona College) earned bronze with an IC4A-qualifying mark of 4.80m (15'9"), while fellow senior Sam Wilson(Davidsonville, Md./South River) placed sixth, hitting a height of 4.50m (14'9").


Freshman Brandan McGee (Hiram, Ohio/Crestwood) placed fifth in the men's 3,000-meter steeplechase in 9:20.63, while junior Roy Jones (New Market, Md./Linganore) crossed the line eighth. Senior Sam Boimov (Montgomery Village, Md./Gaithersburg/Salisbury) finished seventh in the finals of the men's 10,000-meter run in 32.08.30.


Junior Aaron Brooks (Upper Marlboro, Md./DeMatha) placed eighth in the men's hammer throw with a heave of 48.90m (160'5").


The final day of the meet begins at 9 a.m. at UMBC Stadium with the conclusion of the decathlon and heptathlon.
