Men's Track and Field Picked Fourth in America East, Women Fifth; Retrievers Begin 2010-11 Season at Bison Opener Saturday

CAMBRIDGE, Mass.—The UMBC men's and women's indoor track and field teams have been picked to finish fourth and fifth at the 2011 America East Indoor Championships, respectively, as announced by the conference Wednesday. The Retrievers open up the 2010-11 season with the Bison Opener Saturday in Lewisburg, Pa.


The men, who finished third at last year's indoor conference meet, will look to rely on junior Joshua Hewitson (New Market, Md./Linganore), who finished fourth in the 500-meter dash and broke the UMBC record at the IC4A Championships, and seniorKeith Onto (Point Pleasant, N.J./Point Pleasant Boro/St. Francis (PA)), who broke the school record in the heptathlon and took home silver at the conference meet.


Also returning to the team is senior Michael Christmas (Invercargill, New Zealand/James Hargest College), who placed fourth in the 800-meter run at the conference meet and is the school record holder in the outdoor 800, and junior Aaron Brooks (Upper Marlboro, Md./Dematha), who set the UMBC record in the shot put a year ago.


On the women's side, both of UMBC's gold medal winners from the conference meet, seniorSara Parkinson (Chorley, England/Loughborough University) and sophomore Amanda Deller(Aberdeen, Md./Aberdeen), return as the Retrievers look to build on a fifth place finish at last year's America East Championships. Parkinson earned gold and broke the UMBC record in the 5,000-meter run also took home bronze in the 3,000-meter run and finished fourth in the 1-mile run. Deller, who won the shot put at last year's conference meet, also took home bronze in the weight throw.


Also returning are juniors Kiki Malomo-Paris (Northern Ireland/Glenlola Collegiate School) and Laura Walker (Eldersburg, Md./Liberty), who set school records in the long jump and pole vault, respectively.
