Devaud Earns Bronze in Heptathlon at Lehigh Covert Classic

BETHLEHEM, Pa.-- Five UMBC members of the UMBC indoor track and field team competed in the 17th Annual Lehigh John Covert Classic on Saturday at Lehigh University. Junior Dominic Devaud (Baltimore, Md./Archbishop Curley) finished third in the men's heptathlon, qualifying for the IC4A Championships in March with a score of 4,905. On the women's side, senior Toni Boyd (Waldorf, Md./Westlake) placed third in the pentathlon with a score of 2,815.

Devaud won two events in the heptathlon, the 60-meter hurdles in 8.51 and the pole vault with a mark of 4.61m (15'1.5"). The junior also finished tied for second with senior Jude Rene (Hamilton, N.J./Hamilton North/Monmouth) in the 60-meter dash in a time of 7.31.

Boyd won the shot put event of the pentathlon, hitting a mark of 12.70m (41'8"), while earning silver in both the high jump and long jump.

Rene finished fourth in the competition, including second in both the long jump and the high jump. Freshman Matt Waters (Washingtonville, N.Y./Washingtonville) placed eighth in the heptathlon, while junior Michael Buccheri(Hazlet, N.J./Raritan/Monmouth) placed 15th, including a third place finish in the shot put.

The entire UMBC indoor track and field team returns to action Saturday at George Mason.
