UMBC Indoor Track and Field Opens 2009 at Gulden Relays Saturday

BALTIMORE-- The UMBC men's and women's indoor track and field teams open 2009 with the Gulden Relays in Lewisburg, Pa. on Saturday. The Retrievers look to qualify more athletes for the 2009 IC4A/ECAC Indoor Championships in March after having five qualifying marks at the Bison Opener in late 2008.

Juniors Adrian Arthur (Bowie, Md./Bowie) and Antonio Thomas (Columbia, Md./Long Reach) and sophomore Allieu Shaw (Gaithersburg, Md./Gaithersburg) all qualified in the 60-meter dash, while junior Keith Brown (Columbia,Md./McDonogh) ran a 8.18 in the 60-meter hurdles to qualify. Shaw became the first Retriever this season to qualify for two events, meeting the mark in the triple jump as well.

On the women's side, junior Britney Foreman (Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake) looks to improve upon her UMBC record-setting time of 7.72 in the 60-meter dash at the Bison Opener, which was only one-tenth of a second shy of an ECAC qualifying mark. Senior Alex Hyland (Toms River, N.J./Toms River South/St. Francis (Pa.)) was the lone Retriever winner at the meet, taking the 3,000-meter run in 10:32.76.
