Men's Tennis Takes Bevy of Matches to Distance, But Falls to No. 50 Penn State

University Park, Pa. – UMBC took seven of nine matches to the wire against No. 50 Penn State, but the Retrievers fell to the Nittany Lions, 7-0 on Sunday, January 31.


PSU won the first match of the day at No. 2 doubles, but then both the Nos. 1 and 3 matches were tightly played. But both Retriever duos of Justin Carter (Randallstown, Md.) and Alex Drean (Bayonne, France) at No. 1, and No. 3 Biyik Akinshemoyin (Laurel, Md./Reservoir) and Kevin Hsieh (Ellicott City,Md./Centennial) at No. 3, both dropped 7-5 decisions.


The Lions took a 2-0 lead with a victory at No. 4 singles, but the next three matches went the distance. At Nos. 1 and 2, Carter and Melker Svard (Gothenburg, Sweden) each dropped the first set, but fought back to even their matches with identical 6-3 second set triumphs. But Penn State clinched the match by bouncing back with third set victories in both matches.


At No. 3, Drean won the first set over Matt Barry, but lost a heartbreaker, 4-6, 6-1, 7-6 (3).
