Men's Tennis Drops Narrow Decision to Nationally-Ranked TAMCC

Corpus Christi, Texas – The 61st-ranked Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders won a pair of matches over visiting UMBC, defeating the Retrievers, 4-2, in the morning match-up and triumphing, 4-0, in the afternoon.

The two sides competed in singles only during the morning session and UMBC played TAMCC right down to the wire. The hosts captured the Nos. 1 and 6 matches, but the Retrievers evened the match as senior Eliott Loubatie (Paris, France) earned the first point with a 6-4, 6-3 triumph at the No. 4 position and classmate Melker Svard (Gothenburg, Sweden) sprinted past Guillaume Rauseo, 4-6, 7-6 (3), 6-0 at the No. 3 slot.

In a grueling match at No. 5, Paul Cook secured at least a tie for TAMCC with a 6-1, 2-6, 7-6 (3) squeaker over UMBC junior Biyik Akinshemoyin (Laurel, Md./Reservoir). The Islanders won the match outright when Ricardo Mayagoitia rallied to edge senior Justin Carter (Randallstown, Md.), 3-6, 6-3, 7-5.

In the nightcap, TAMCC captured the doubles point with victories at the Nos. 3 and 2 slots. Then, they captured singles matches at the Nos. 6, 1 and 3 positions and the other contests went unfinished. UMBC was leading in two of those matches and tied in another when play was halted.

The Retrievers complete play in Texas when they travel to Rice for a Sunday contest.
