Kononov Advances to Quarterfinals of ITA Regionals

Blacksburg, Va. – UMBC senior Jaan Kononov (Talinn, Estonia) advanced to the quarterfinals USTA/ITA Regional Championships, besting a pair of players in straight sets in matches played at Virginia Tech University.

Kononov defeated Liberty's Egon Samaai, 6-2, 6-4, and then triumphed over 16th-seeded Aaron Gomez, of the host Hokies, 6-4, 6-3.

The Retriever season will take on another player from Virginia Tech, as he faces sixth-seeded Eduordo Tessaro on Monday.

Both Retriever doubles teams fell in quarterfinal action this morning. Kononov and classmate Melker Svard fell to the fourth-seeded squad from GW, while seniors Justin Carter (Randallstown, Md.) and Alex Drean (Bayonne, France) were ousted by the second-seeded duo from Virginia Tech by an 8-4 margin.
