UMBC senior tennis standout Jaan Kononov has been ranked No. 69 in the nation in the preseason Oracle/ITA Division I Men's National Singles Rankings. He has also been placed into the qualifying round of the 2015 Saint Francis Health System ITA Men's All-American Championships, which takes opens on Sunday, Oct. 3 in Tulsa, Okla. The former Division II All-American and second-year Retriever won five matches in pre-qualifying and advanced to the qualifying round of the 2014 ITA All-American Championships.
Kononov earned the No. 7 ranking of the top 20 players in the region and was ranked 110th in the nation at the conclusion of the 2015 spring campaign. His final year ranking is the highest ever for a UMBC tennis player. UMBC Hall of Famer Josef Novotny ended the 2004 season slotted at No. 8 in the Northeast region.
"I am very proud of Jaan's achievements… as he defeated two players ranked in the top 50 in the country to earn his national ranking," Head Coach Rob Hubbard said after the 2015 season concluded. "His ranking places him squarely in the top three-to-four percent of all Division I tennis players in the country. Like the men's team, I am looking forward to Jaan continuing to build on his success in the 2015-16 year."
