Men's Tennis Dominates Drexel, 4-0

BALTIMORE – The UMBC men's tennis team put on a dominant performance and blanked Drexel, 4-0, late on Valentine's Day at 40 West Racquet Club.

The Retrievers won their second consecutive match over a CAA opponent and improved to 3-2 on the season.

Juniors Jaan Kononov (Talinn, Estonia) and Melker Svard (Gothenburg, Sweden) make short work at the No. 2 doubles flight, rolling to a 6-0 victory. UMBC's No. 1 duo of senior Daniel Gray (Bowie, Md./The Bullis School) and Alex Drean (Bayonne, France) clinched the doubles points with a 6-3 triumph.

Svard continued his stellar play in singles, ousting Kashyap Ashok, 6-3, 6-1 at the No. 3 flight. Then, Drean duplicated that effort, defeating Hamza Laaleg by the same score at the No. 4 position. Junior Justin Carter (Randallstown, Md.) wrapped up the night for the Retrievers with an equally solid, 6-2, 6-2 triumph over Xabier Saavedra at the No. 2 slot.

UMBC competes against its third consecutive CAA foe when they take on a strong William & Mary squad in Williamsburg on Feb. 21.
