BALTIMORE- The UMBC men's tennis program will compete in the Missouri Valley Conference as an associate member for the 2015 and 2016 spring championship campaigns.
"I am excited about the men's tennis program joining the Missouri Valley Conference," said head coach Rob Hubbard. "With the elimination of men's tennis in the America East Conference, it was imperative that we were able to find a new home quickly and continue to have an opportunity for the AQ into the NCAA Championships."
UMBC is one of three America East institutions to join the league, as Stony Brook and Hartford join the Retrievers in the St. Louis-headquartered conference.
Drake University, Illinois State University, Southern Illinois University and Wichita State University are MVC schools which sponsor men's tennis. Drake was ranked No. 40 in the nation by the ITA and had two players ranked in the top 50 nationally as of Jan. 27, 2015.
UMBC will face Hartford (at UMBC, March 22) and Stony Brook (at SBU, April 3), but not see the other schools until the league championships in St. Louis April 17-19.
"The MVC is a tough conference, including nationally-ranked programs from Drake and Wichita State leading the pack, but we welcome the opportunity to compete at that level," said Hubbard.
