Annapolis, Md. – The UMBC men's tennis team continued its 2014 fall campaign by taking three of four doubles matches and seven of eight in singles as the Retrievers competed against the University of Delaware in the Navy Invitational.
Senior Daniel Gray (Bowie, Md./The Bullis School) and junior Alex Drean (Bayonne, France) posted outstanding performances to lead the Retrievers. The duo combined at No. 1 doubles to defeat the Blue Hens' top tandem of Mike Furr/Tyler Flematti, 8-4.
In singles action, Drean assumed the No. 1 position and edged Furr, 7-5, 6-4, while Gray pulled out a close match with Flematti, 6-4, 7-6 (3).
Three other Retrievers also posted wins in doubles and singles. Senior Kamal Patel (Germantown, Md. / Seneca Valley) combined with Eliott Loubatie (Paris, France) to cruise past Matt Renzi/Shane Jaffray, 8-2, at the No. 2 doubles position. The veteran Patel then outlasted Tim Puterio, 7-5, 6-4 at the No. 4 singles slot.
Upperclassmen Justin Lansinger (Eldersburg, Md. / Liberty) and Eric Jarkowski (Baltimore, Md. / Baltimore Polytechnic Institute) combined to defeat Colin Wong/Roy Cheng, 8-5 at the No. 4 doubles flight. Lansinger easily got post Wong, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 7 singles, while Jarkowski won a three-setter, 6-4, 1-6, 6-4, over Cheng.
UMBC juniors Justin Carter (Randallstown, Md.), Melker Svard (Gothenburg, Sweden) and Jaan Kononov (Talinn, Estonia) did not compete. The trio will see action in the 2014 Saint Francis Health System ITA Men's All-American Championships in Tulsa, Okla. beginning on Monday, Sept. 29.
UMBC is slated to face Navy on Saturday to conclude play in the tournament.
