BALTIMORE - Seven is a lucky number for the UMBC men’s tennis program.
In the final 2016 ITA rankings, the Retrievers were ranked No. 7 in the brutally tough Atlantic region. Moreover, rising senior Jaan Kononov (Estonia/Armstrong State) earned the No. 7 ranking of the top 20 players in the region and was ranked 110th in the nation.
ST. LOUIS – UMBC juniors Justin Carter (Randallstown, Md.) and Jaan Kononov (Talinn, Estonia) were named to the 2015 Missouri Valley Conference men's tennis All-Conference team at the conclusion of the league championships. Kononov moved into the ITA Top 125 this week, now ranked No. 106 nationally.
ST. LOUIS – The UMBC men’s tennis team waged a tremendous battle against 59th-ranked Wichita State, but fell, 4-2, to the Shockers in the semifinals of the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament, held at the Dwight Davis Tennis Complex. After UMBC dropped the doubles point, Retriever junior Jaan Kononov (Talinn, Estonia) blistered the nation’s 46th-ranked player, WSU junior Tin Ostojic, 6-2, 6-0 at No. 1 singles.
St. Louis, Mo. – The UMBC men’s tennis team advanced to the Missouri Valley Conference semi-finals, as the Retrievers defeated Southern Illinois, 4-1, at Westminster Christian Academy. The Retrievers (12-5), winners of four consecutive matches, will take on nationally-ranked (No. 57) Wichita State tomorrow at 1:30 p.m. CDT at the Dwight Davis Complex.
BALTIMORE – The UMBC men’s tennis team won its home finale, defeating a strong Georgetown squad, 5-2, at the UMBC Tennis Complex. The Retrievers won their third straight match and triumphed for the fifth time in the last six matches.
BALTIMORE – The UMBC class of 2016 carried the day for the men’s tennis team, as four juniors were double-winners as the host Retrievers defeated a solid Navy squad, 5-2, at the UMBC Tennis Complex. UMBC won for the third time in four outings and improved to 9-5, while Navy slipped to 15-9.
Charleston, S.C. – UMBC junior Jaan Kononov (Talinn, Estonia) was a double-winner for the visiting Retrievers, but host College of Charleston won four of six singles matches and edged UMBC, 4-3 at the C.of C. Tennis Center.
Richmond, Va. – The UMBC men’s tennis team pulled out a pair of tough doubles matches, then won three of the first four singles matches decided and upset national power VCU, 4-2, at Thalhimer Tennis Center. Junior Melker Svard was a double-winner for UMBC, combining with classmate Jaan Kononov to win the clinching match at No. 2 doubles and winning in straight set at No. 3 singles.
BALTIMORE – The UMBC men’s tennis team did not drop a set in a 7-0 victory over local rival Morgan State at Greenspring Racquet Club. The Retrievers have won four of their last five matches and stand at 5-3 on the campaign.
Blacksburg, Va. – The UMBC men’s tennis team nearly took the doubles point from 35th-ranked Virginia Tech, but fell just short, and the Hokies carried the momentum to singles, where they triumphed, 7-0.
Williamsburg, Va. – After a difficult 4-3 loss at William & Mary in 2014, the UMBC men’s tennis team exacted a measure of revenge against the regionally-ranked Tribe, winning four of six singles matches and defeating the hosts, 4-3 at McCormack-Nagelsen Tennis Center.
BALTIMORE – The UMBC men’s tennis team put on a dominant performance and blanked Drexel, 4-0, late on Valentine’s Day at 40 West Racquet Club. The Retrievers won their second consecutive match over a CAA opponent and improved to 3-2 on the season.
BALTIMORE – The UMBC men’s tennis team shook off any rust from a 15-day layoff and blanked Delaware, 7-0, in a three-hour match at Forty West Racquet Club. The Retrievers evened their record at 2-2 on the season.
BALTIMORE- The UMBC men’s tennis program will compete in the Missouri Valley Conference as an associate member for the 2015 and 2016 spring championship campaigns. UMBC is one of three America East institutions to join the league, as Stony Brook and Hartford join the Retrievers in the St. Louis-headquartered conference.
Corpus Christi, Texas – In a rare tennis doubleheader, the Retrievers fell in a pair of matches to the host Texas A&M Corpus Christi Islanders. UMBC was edged, 4-3, in the nightcap, after dropping the opener, 4-0.
Edinburg, Texas – Senior Daniel Gray (Bowie, Md./The Bullis School) and junior Alex Drean (Bayonne, France) picked up where they left off in the fall, as the duo clinched the doubles point for UMBC and picked up singles victories as the Retrievers edged UT-Pan American, 4-3, in the opener for both squads.
Charlottesville, Va. – The UMBC doubles tandem of senior Daniel Gray and junior Alex Drean won their fourth consecutive match and advanced to the finals of the 2014 ITA Atlantic Regionals. Gray and Drean, the No. 7 seeds, took out the eighth-seeded duo of Monteiro/Corbett of Virginia Tech, 6-3, 7-5 on Monday. They will now face the fifth-seeded duo of Shane/Corintelli from the host University of Virginia squad on Tuesday.
Charlottesville, Va. – The UMBC doubles duo of senior Daniel Gray (Bowie, Md./The Bullis School) and junior Alex Drean (Bayonne, France) could not pull off a final upset and fell to the fifth-seeded team of Virginia’s Ryan Shane and Luca Corinteli, 6-3, 6-3, in the championship doubles match of the ITA Atlantic Regionals.
Charlottesville, Va. – The UMBC doubles tandem of Daniel Gray (Bowie, Md./The Bullis School) and junior Alex Drean (Bayonne, France) advanced to the semifinals of the 2014 ITA Atlantic Regionals on Sunday. The seventh-seeded duo advanced to the semis by defeating the second-seeded pairing (ranked 34 nationally) of Dias/Tverijonas of George Washington, 8-7 (5). Gray and Drean will now take on the duo of eighth-seeded Monteiro/Corbett of Virginia Tech on Monday.
