BALTIMORE – The UMBC men's tennis team plays is penultimate home match of the 2014 season when the Retrievers welcome Georgetown to the Retriever Tennis Complex on Wednesday, April 9. The opening serves are set to take place at 2:00 p.m.
The men (10-8) snapped a four-match losing streak with the 4-3 victory over Xavier. Freshman Biyik Akinshemoyin (Laurel, Md./Resevoir) competed in the tie-breaking match at No. 6 singles versus Xavier and pulled out a 6-2, 2-6, 7-5 victory to give the host Retrievers the victory. The Retrievers traveled for a Sunday morning contest at William & Mary and were edged, 4-3, by the Tribe. Sophomores Justin Carter (Randallstown, Md./National Connections Academy), Melker Svard (Gothenburg, Sweden) and Eliott Loubatie (Paris, France) won at Nos. 1,2, and 4 singles at W&M. Junior Kamal Patel (Germantown, Md./Seneca Valley) keyed the victory over Xavier with wins at No. 2 doubles and No. 5 singles. Patel went 3-1 for the weekend. Svard became the first Retriever to reach the 10-win mark in singles this spring (10-6).
The Georgetown men's tennis team (7-9, 0-1 BIG EAST) swept the Connecticut Huskies on Saturday afternoon, 6-0, in a non-conference match on Georgetown's campus. GU's Daniel Khanin defeated Wayne Harell in a three-set match on Saturday from the No. 1 court, 6-7, 6-3, 6-1. Shane Korber also won a long, three-set victory over UConn's Jacob Spreyer, 6-4, 6-7, 6-3.
