Men's Tennis Debuts With 7-0 Shutout of Prairie View A&M

Edinburg, Texas – The UMBC men's tennis team opened its 2014 with a 7-0 victory over Prairie View A&M in a match played at Texas-Pan American's tennis complex.
The Retrievers captured the doubles point with convincing victories at the No. 1 and 3 positions. Sophomores Justin Carter (Randallstown, Md.) and Melker Svard (Gothenburg, Sweden) clinched the point by defeating the Panther duo, 6-3, after sophomore Eliott Loubatie (Paris, France) and junior Kamal Patel (Germantown, Md./Seneca Valley) blanked their foes, 6-0.
Sophomore Alex Drean (Bayonne, France) opened singles play with a 6-3, 6-0 victory over PVAM's Rosaki Gbadamosi at the No. 3 singles position. Loubatie continued his impressive day with a 6-1, 6-0 triumph over the Panthers' David Aldaz at the No. 4 position and the Retrievers clinched the match when junior Daniel Gray (Bowie, Md./The Bullis School) defeated Carlos McEntyre, 6-2, 6-3.
"The men looked well prepared today for both their doubles and singles matches," head coach Rob Hubbard said. "The week down here training definitely paid off as they were comfortable with both the outdoors and the temperature."
Svard, Patel and Carter also won their singles matches at Nos. 2, 6, and 1 respectively in straight sets.
The Retrievers take on nationally-ranked Texas A&M Corpus Christi on Sunday afternoon.
