BOSTON – In its first swimming and diving awards of the 2019-20 season, the America East Conference tabbed UMBC sophomore Tiago Asakawa (Sumaré, Brazil) and senior Ben Parker (Lawrenceville, Ga.) Male Swimmer and Diver of the Week, respectively for competitions ending Oct. 13.
In the season opener versus 15th-ranked Navy, Asakawa captured one individual gold and swam a leg of both Retriever winning relays. He captured the 50-yard freestyle event in a time of 21.09, giving UMBC its first individual gold of the season.
In the opening 200-yard medley relay, Asakawa swam the third leg as UMBC posted a time of 1.32.18 to edge Navy's top relay by .34 seconds. He was the second competitor in the 400-yard freestyle relay, as UMBC closed the meet with a flourish, coming from just off the pace to defeat the Midshipmen.
Parker captured the 3-meter diving competition with a score of 236.77. He won the same event at the America East Championships as a sophomore in 2018.
The award is the second of Parker's career – he earned his first honor on January 8, 2019.
The Retrievers return to action on Saturday when they take on Johns Hopkins and Delaware in Newark, Del. The meet gets underway at 1:00 p.m.
