Retrievers Start Patriot Invitational on Strong Note

Day One Results

Fairfax, Va.—UMBC swimming and diving opened the Patriot Invitational on Thursday with a strong showing in the pool. Junior Emily Escobedo (New Rochelle, N.Y./Maria Regina) picked up an individual victory in the 200 IM. 

Escobedo posted a time of 2:02.83 in the prelims, before going 2:02.26 in the finals of the 200 IM to earn the lone Retriever victory on Thursday.

The women got a third place finish in the 400 medley relay. The quartet of Lauren Day, Emily Escobedo, Amanda Day, and Hania Moro touched in with at time of 3:49.72.

On the boards, Coco Darelius took home silver on the 3 meter boards. Darelius scored 270.00, up from her prelim score of 263.40.

On the men's side, the Retrievers got a pair of second place finishes from Nikola Trajkovic and Gregor Spoerlein. Trajkovic placed second in the 200 IM, finishing in a time of 1:50.94 while Spoerlein won silver in the 50 free with a time of 20.90.

UMBC earned a second place finish in the 200 free relay as the team of Andrew Sanchez, Darnell Yarberough, Bryan Mattingly and Spoerlein touched in at 1:23.30.

Day two of the meet kicks off tomorrow at 10:00 a.m. with prelims and finals starting at 6:00 p.m.
