Retrievers Have Strong Showing at Bucknell on Sunday


Lewisburg, Pa.—The UMBC men's and women's swimming and diving teams competed in their first dual meet of the season at Bucknell on Sunday. The exhibition meet saw the Retrievers compete and win in a majority of the events.

On the men's side, the Retrievers swept the relays, winning in the 200 medley and the 400 free. In the 200 medley, the team of Lauri Kaei, Leo Endres, Andrew Schrantz, and Trevor Doll took the gold with a time of 1:35.52. The 400 free quartet of Jonas Gutzat, Jared Vance, Rob Breen, and Gregor Spoerlein  took first with a time of 3:09.10, a full second ahead of the second place finishers.

Gutzat picked up two individual wins in the 1000 and 500 free. Jonas won the 1000 free with a time of 9:50.35, and the 500 free in 4:42.70. Andrew McKissick was a winner in the 200 fly, crossing the finish line at 1:54.47. Spoerlein earned gold in the 200 free finishing in 1:41.03, and also earning first in the 100 free with a time of 45.75. Gregor closed the day with a win in the 50 free. He crossed the tape in 21.05.

On the boards, senior Pak Lam Wong was winner on the 1 meter board, with 237.38, while Ryan Green won the 3 meter dive with 262.13.

The women also swept both relays, winning the 200 medley (Lauren Day, Emily Escobedo, Hannah Sutherland, Kristie Langford) in a time of 1:48.79. Allie Caulfield, Grace Dai, Courtney Hadden and Catherine Frediani won the 400 free relay in 3:38.81.

Escobedo continued where she left off last year, winning the 200 breast in a time of 2:18.27. Stephanie Romano was a winner in the 500 free with a time of 5:09.96, as well as the 200 free in 1:57.65. Kayla Lilly picked up a victory in the 200 IM for the Retrievers. Lilly crossed the tape in a time of 2:11.48, while also winning the 100 IM in 1:02.60. Langford was an individual winner in the 100 free. Kristie finished in a time of 53.46, just out-touching Lauren Perry of Bucknell.

Corinna Darelius took the 3 meter diving competition, with a score of 218.03 for UMBC.

The Retrievers are back in the pool on Saturday, October 11. UMBC hosts Rider at 1:00 p.m. to open the regular season.
