CHARLOTTE, N.C. – UMBC senior Mohamed Hussein (Cairo, Egypt/Victory College) has been named the Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association (CSSA) Male Swimmer of the Week, the conference office announced on Wednesday afternoon.
The honor is the first for the UMBC men's swimming and diving team since joining the swimming-only conference for the 2013-14 academic year. Hussein, a two-time America East Male Swimmer of the Year honoree, had previously collected six weekly conference awards from the America East in his first two seasons with the Retrievers.
This past weekend, Hussein led UMBC past Rider, 158-133, in the team's first dual meet of the season by claiming three individual event titles, and leading off for the victorious 200 medley relay squad. After swimming the backstroke leg of the medley relay, which went on to break the pool record, Hussein took the top spot in the 200-yd. freestyle (1:43.45). Then, he tied the pool record (21.31) in the 50 free, and capped his day with a win in the 200 IM.
The Retrievers now open up their 2013-14 home schedule by hosting Navy on Friday, Oct. 18 at the UMBC Aquatic Complex. The meet is scheduled to begin at 4:00 p.m.
