BALTIMORE – The UMBC swimming and diving program has selected six captains to lead the Retrievers during the 2013-14 season, head coach Chad Cradock announced on Thursday morning.
Seniors Evan Carey (Grand Island, N.Y./Grand Island), Brian Keane (Hanson, Mass./Boston College HS/Arizona), and Reed Neuendorf (Blauvelt, N.Y./Tappan Zee) will guide the men's squad, while seniors Patty Hallberg (Severna Park, Md./Broadneck) and Erika Ronning (Western Springs, Ill./Lyons Township), as well as junior Lexi Coon (Camden, Del./Milford) were chosen to lead the women.
"We're very excited for our new leadership," said Cradock, who is entering his 13th season at the helm of his alma mater. "Each individual is very different and brings something unique to the position and to the program."
Each of the three men contributed during their junior years as the Retrievers recorded just their second-ever undefeated dual meet season. Then, at the America East Championships, Carey and Neuendorf each earned an individual silver medal as UMBC recaptured the conference title, scoring a meet record 1,075 points.
Each of the three female captains recorded a breakout season in 2012-13, helping the Retrievers finish 5-3 in dual meets and place second at the conference meet at Maine. Ronning won six dual meet events before taking home an individual gold and silver at the America East meet. Coon, meanwhile, won her first career dual meet event during the season and then earned three top-ten finishes in Maine. A leader in the pool and in the classroom, Hallberg was selected to the America East All-Academic Team after registering season-best times in all three events at the conference championships.
"We feel confident that these six captains will serve our program well," Cradock added. "They will help us achieve our goal of being a model program."
UMBC opens its 2013-14 campaign with an exhibition meet at Bucknell on Oct. 5 before traveling to Rider on Oct. 12.
