BALTIMORE – UMBC senior diver Andrew Eckhoff (Chelmsford, Mass./Chelmsford) and junior swimmer Mohamed Hussein (Cairo, Egypt/Victory College) received recognition in the 2012-13 College Swimming Awards, the publication announced on Wednesday.
Eckhoff was listed in the Male Career Improvement section as a finalist for the award while Hussein received consideration for the Male Break-Out Athlete honor.
"We are very proud of our program as a whole and for their accomplishments this season," said head coach Chad Cradock. "Andrew and Mohamed represent everything we wanted and want, and we look forward to continuing the great traditions we have here at UMBC."
After starting slowly in his career at UMBC, Eckhoff became a leader in and out of the pool for the Retrievers, captaining the men's squad each of the last two seasons. During his junior and senior year, Eckhoff swept the two diving events at the America East Championships each time around, while adding the ECAC titles in 2013. As a junior he broke the school record in the 3-meter diving competition twice, and then set a new America East meet standard as a senior.
Hussein, meanwhile, burst on to the scene during his first semester at UMBC during the second half of the 2011-12 season, but surpassed all expectations and reached the national stage in 2012-13. Already replicating his feat of winning three individual gold medals at the conference championships and reclaiming the Most Outstanding Male Swimmer award, Hussein became the third Retriever ever, and first male, to qualify for the NCAA Championships after a stunning performance at the ECAC Championships at Harvard. Then in Indianapolis, Hussein set career-best times, all of which are school record, in each of his three events – 200 backstroke, 200 freestyle, and 200 IM.
