SOMERS, Wis. – After earning the Most Outstanding Male Swimmer Award for the second straight year at the America East Championships, junior Mohamed Hussein (Cairo, Egypt/Victory College) has been named the Counsilman-Hunsaker National Collegiate Division I Swimmer-of-the-Week by CollegeSwimming.com, the website announced on Tuesday night.  Hussein is the first Retriever swimmer to ever earn the national accolade after garnering four America East honors during the year.

"Mohamed has proven himself in the pool time after time, especially this last weekend," said head coach Chad Cradock.  "He embodies everything that we want in a student-athlete."

Last weekend at the championships in Orono, Maine, Hussein won three individual events in addition to helping the Retrievers claim three relay titles. In all, the junior broke three conference records (200 IM, 100 back, and 200 back) and achieved NCAA B cuts in the 200 free, 200 IM, and 200 back.

In the first men's race of the meet, the versatile junior recorded a school and pool record 200 free split of 1:36.83, as the 800 relay team won gold with a pool record-time of 6:38.08.

The next day in his first individual event of the four-day meet, Hussein broke his own school, conference, and meet mark, in addition to snapping the pool record, in the 200 IM with a time of 1:45.67.  He was not done, however, as over the next two days he accomplished the same feats in the 100 back (48.53) and 200 back (1:45.45) events.

In less than two years at UMBC after coming in the middle of the 2011-12 season, Hussein has etched his named into the school record book in four individual disciplines and holds the UMBC Aquatic Complex pool record in the 200 IM (1:51.92), which he set against Howard back on Nov. 10.

Hussein and a select group of Retrievers will continue their season at the ECAC Championships in two weeks in Cambridge, Mass.  The post-season regional meet will be held at Harvard University from Mar. 1-3 at Blodgett Pool.
