BALTIMORE – UMBC junior Mohamed Hussein (Cairo, Egypt/Victory College) heads to Indianapolis as the first Retriever male swimmer to qualify for the NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships, when the national meet starts on Thursday, Mar. 28 at IU Natatorium on the campus of Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI).
Hussein is just the third Retriever to ever qualify for the national meet, following in the footsteps of Jackie Wisnauskas and Lindsey Prather who reached the championships in 1990 and 2002, respectively.
The Cairo, Egypt native will compete in the 200 IM, 200 free, and 200 backstroke events in Indianapolis after breaking the school record in each event during the 2012-13 season.

In his second season with the Retrievers, Hussein surpassed his accomplishments from his initial campaign as he repeated as the America East Most Outstanding Male Swimmer and then added the same accolade at the ECAC meet.
At the conference meet in Orono, Maine, Hussein won three individual gold medals, set four school records, and broke three meet and conference records. Then at the regional meet at Harvard, the versatile junior broke his own school marks in the 200 IM and 200 back and set new UMBC marks in the 50- and 100-free events. In addition to capturing gold medals in both of the 200-yd. events, Hussein led the 400 free relay team to a new school record time of 2:58.47.
Hussein will begin the national competition with the prelims of the 200 IM on Thursday morning, followed by the 200 freestyle on Friday and the 200 backstroke on Saturday. The preliminary rounds will begin at 11:00 a.m. each morning with the finals set to start at 7:00 p.m. each evening.
