Retrievers Bring in Three More Weekly America East Swimming and Diving Awards

America East Release

CAMBRIDGE, MASS. – After sweeping Howard at the UMBC Aquatic Complex last Saturday, the UMBC swimming and diving teams hauled in three more America East weekly honors, the conference office announced on Tuesday afternoon.

Senior Mohamed Hussein (Cairo, Egypt/Victory College) was named the America East Male Swimmer of the Week for the third time in four weeks, while classmate Andrew Eckhoff (Chelmsford, Mass./Chelmsford) earned the Most Outstanding Male Diver of the Week award for the third time this season.  For the women, sophomore Katie Bean (Mechanicsville, Va./Atlee) made it a sweep of the diving awards, winning the Female Diver of the Week honor.

Hussein's third  award comes after picking up multiple victories yet again this past weekend, winning two events against the Bison.  Even more impressive, the senior broke an 11-year old pool record in the 200-yd IM, outpacing the field with a time of 1:51.92.  Kevin Goh had previously set the record at 1:52.44 back in 2001.  Hussein has now won five career conference weekly honors since coming to UMBC in the middle of the 2011-12 season.

Senior Andrew Eckhoff

Eckhoff receives his third accolade of the year and 12th of his career after sweeping the diving competitions on Saturday.  The senior, who was named the America East Most Outstanding Male Diver at last year's championships, set a season-best and qualified for the NCAA Zones in the 1-meter competition by scoring 318.60 en route to victory.  Eckhoff also won the 3-meter event by scoring 295.80.

To complete the diving sweep, Bean earns her second career conference honor after taking both diving events last weekend.  The sophomore set a season-best while winning the 1-meter competition with score of 254.32 and then claimed the 1-meter victory by scoring 232.05.

UMBC has now received nine total weekly awards this season from the conference, led by Eckhoff and Hussein who have earned honors three times.  In addition to Bean's award, freshman Corinna Darelius (Rye, N.Y./Rye) was named Female Diver of the Week on Oct. 23 and senior Pierre De Waal (Pretoria, South Africa/Tuks Sport/Cleveland State) was named Male Swimmer of the Week on Oct. 16.

The Retrievers return to the pool to close out the first half of their 2012-13 schedule with the Patriot Invitation beginning on Thursday, Nov. 15.  The three-day competition hosted by George Mason will feature two sessions each day starting at 10:00 a.m. and 6 p.m., respectively.
