CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – UMBC seniors Pierre De Waal (Pretoria, South Africa/Tuks Sport/Cleveland State) and Andrew Eckhoff (Chelmsford, Mass./Chelmsford) were named the America East Male Swimmer of the Week and Male Diver of the Week, respectively, the conference office announced on Tuesday afternoon.  This is the first week that the conference office has given out weekly awards this season.

For De Waal, this is his fifth time receiving the conference honor after winning it twice last season as a junior and twice as a sophomore in 2010-11.  Meanwhile, the award is Eckhoff's tenth weekly honor of his career after picking up six awards as a junior and three as a sophomore.

In the Retrievers' first dual meet of the season against Rider, De Waal won three individual events while also helping the 400 free relay team claim victory.  The versatile senior began his day with a nearly two-second win in the 200-yd. freestyle (1:43.26) and then followed it by besting the field by almost seven seconds in the 200-yd. butterfly (1:51.53).  In his final individual event of the day, the 500-yd. free, De Waal edged out teammate Rob Breen in a time of 4:43.46.
