BALTIMORE—Senior Eric Jones of the men's swimming and diving team was named UMBC Athlete of the Month for January 2011 in a poll of fans conducted from Feb. 1-7. Jones received 410 of 863 total votes (47.5 percent) to edge runner-up Abbey McKenney of women's swimming and diving (352 votes, 40.8 percent). Chris De La Rosa of men's basketball, Amanda Deller and Joshua Hewitsonof track and field and Michelle Kurowski of women's basketball were also nominated.
Jones finished the dual meet season undefeated in the 200-yard freestyle and has won the event at 15 straight meets. He earned 11 medals in January with eight golds, including five individual first-place finishes. The native of Gambrills, Md., was named America East Swimmer of the Week twice last month, giving him four such awards on the season. His first weekly honor came after his performance against Drexel and Howard on Jan. 8, when he won the 50 free and the 100 fly, and he garnered the accolade again after winning the 200 and 500 free on Senior Day against Marist on Jan. 22. Jones also placed first in the 200 free against Delaware and William and Mary on Jan. 29. The 2010 America East champion in the 200 free has the league's top time in the event heading into this year's conference meet, which will be held at the Germantown Indoor Swim Center in Boyds, Md., Feb. 17-20.
