Burlington, Vt. – After a scoreless first half, host Vermont scored two early second half goals and went on to a 4-0 win over UMBC at Virtue Field.
The Retrievers drop to 5-9-1 on the season and 0-5-1 in America East play, while Vermont won for the sixth time in seven games and improved to 11-5-0, 5-1-0.
UMBC took the first two shots of the game and put three shots on goal in the first 45 minutes, compared to a pair from the hosts.
But just 1:25 into the second half, UMBC freshman Julian Conze (Telgte, Germany) was whistled for a foul in the box. UMBC sophomore goalkeeper Quantrell Jones (Baltimore, Md./Kenwood) made a dazzling save on the ensuing penalty kick, but the ball took an unusual bounce to Jones' left and initial shooter Orn Arnson finished on the rebound.
The Catamounts doubled the lead two minutes later, forcing the desperate Retrievers to press the attack. UMBC took the next six shots of the game, forcing three saves, but Catamount goals in the 65' and 80' sealed the outcome.
Jones was credited with four saves in the game.
UMBC will wrap up the season on Wednesday, Nov. 6 when they host Stony Brook on Senior Night. The Retrievers will honor seniors Jon Bell, Jordan Dove, Nick Gumbs, Tre Pulliam, Trey Vinson and Colin Weyant before kick-off time.
