Vestal, N.Y. – Visiting UMBC controlled play for long stretches of the game, but host Binghamton scored midway through the second half to defeated the Retrievers, 1-0, at the Bearcats Sports Complex.
The Retrievers outshot the Bearcats, 12-8, and took eight of the game's 11 corner kicks, but could not beat BU netminder P.J. Parker, who made seven saves for his side.
UMBC sophomore goalkeeper Quantrell Jones (Baltimore, Md./Kenwood) responded with six stops, including three aggressive saves when he came out to challenge shooters breaking in alone.
The Retrievers set the pace in the first half, taking eight shots and attempting six corners. Freshman Julian Conze (Telgte, Germany) hit a hard line drive in the 13' which was saves by Parker and senior Jordan Dove (Gambrills, Md./DeMatha) blasted an open 14-yard shot over the goal in the 34'.
Binghamton responded in the second half and nearly scored early, but Jones extended a leg to thwart a close-in chance in the 57'.
The Bearcats would get on the board in the 67' as Dan Mansfield scored from 12 yards out.
UMBC would put three shots on goal in the final 18 minutes. Freshman Ryan Becher (Hummelstown, Pa.) struck a 15-yarder from the center of the box, destined for the right corner, but Parker dove and knocked it out of play.
UMBC falls to 5-8-1 overall and 0-4-1 in America East play, while Binghamton moves to 5-7-2 and 2-3-0.
The Retrievers' next scheduled match is at Vermont on Saturday, Nov. 2 at 2:00 p.m.
