Pulliam, R. Becher Score in Short Order as UMBC Rallies for 2-1 Win

BALTIMORE -  Senior Tre Pulliam (Baltimore, Md./Archbishop Curley) and freshman Ryan Becher (Hummelstown, Pa.) scored in a span of 3:20 early in the second half as the host UMBC Retrievers rallied for a 2-1 victory over St. Peter's in the UMBC/Navy Classic.

The Retrievers improved to 1-2-0 on the season, while the Peacocks fell to 1-1-0.

UMBC will host St. Bonaventure on Sunday at 7:00 p.m. The Bonnies (0-2-0) fell at Navy, 1-0 earlier this evening.

UMBC netminder Quantrell Jones (Baltimore, Md./Kenwood) made an off-balance, brilliant early save, getting a hand on shot just before it crossed the goal line in the 15th minute. But St. Peter's got on the board with 50 seconds remaining in the first half, as Dominic Laws headed in a corner kick from Jamie Davis.

The Retrievers struck without warning in the 57th minute. Sophomore Alejandro Arbelaez (Baltimore, Md./Archbishop Curley) took possession of the ball 40 yards away from goal and drove itl towards the far left post. Pulliam got a left foot on the ball just inside the field of play and re-directed it in to knot the score.

Just 3:20 later, the Retrievers took their first lead of the season. Pulliam got deep in the box and took a shot that was saved, but not controlled by SPU goalkeeper Robbie Anderson. The ball bounded to Becher and the unguarded newcomer took a couple of touches before depositing the ball beyond Anderson from close range.

The Retriever defense kept Jones clean over the final 30 minutes to post the come-from-behind triumph.

UMBC outshot SPU, 15-7, with both of Jones; saves occurring in the first half. Anderson made five saves for the Peacocks.

Pulliam's goal was the tenth of his career and he is UMBC's active leading score with 24 points.

Becher attempted six shots to lead all players, while Laws attempted five of his side's seven efforts.

UMBC will face St. Bonaventure for the first time on Sunday.
