KANSAS CITY – UMBC senior defender Jon Bell (Silver Spring, Md./Richard Montgomery) has been named to the 2019 MAC Hermann Trophy Watch List, United Soccer Coaches announced today.
Bell earned 2018 United Soccer Coaches All-Northeast Region First Team and America East All-Conference Second Team honors, despite missing the first six games of the season due to injury. The Retrievers produced a mark of 6-2-3 in Bell's 11 starts during the season, capped by a run to the America East Conference title game.
Bell has started 41 of 43 games for the black-and-gold and contributed six assists.
Former UMBC defender Oumar Ballo, '15, sociology, earned a spot on the 2014 watch list, a year after current assistant coach Pete Caringi III, '14, psychology, merited a place as a national semi-finalist.
The MAC Hermann Trophy is the most prestigious individual award in NCAA soccer and is presented annually to one male and one female student-athlete.
Bell is one of nine defenders on the 35-member list and one of four student-athletes from the America East Conference to make the list.
The Retrievers open the 2019 at Retriever Soccer Park on Friday, Aug. 30 when they host University of Incarnate Word. UMBC will play its first five contests of the season on their home Bermuda grass surface.
