Baltimore, Md.-- UMBC men's soccer head coach Pete Caringi Jr. announced the 2019 slate today that features 11 home matches, with five home contests to start the year. The Retrievers will open their 53rd season of competition after reaching the America East Championship game last November.
"We have a very competitive schedule again this year and we are excited to play new teams and teams we have not played in a while, highlighted by a trip to UC Santa Barbara," the UMBC Athletics' Hall of Fame mentor said. "Our conference is one of the strongest in the country and we are looking forward to playing in front of our home fans."
The Retrievers will open the year with five straight home games, starting the 2019 season against Incarnate Word on Friday, August 30 and Hofstra on Sunday, September 1. UMBC will welcome Saint Peter's and St. Bonaventure to Retriever Soccer Park on Sept. 6 and 8 as part of the UMBC-Navy Tournament. The Retrievers will then host Long Island University on Saturday, Sept. 14 before ending the month with three road contests at George Washington (Tuesday, 9/17), UC Santa Barbara (Sunday, 9/22) and the America East opener at UMass Lowell (Saturday, 9/28).
The month of October sees the Retrievers travel to Hartford on Saturday, Oct. 5 before returning home for another five-match homestand. UMBC steps out of conference against Liberty just three days later before an RSP showdown with New Hampshire on Saturday, Oct. 12, a rematch of last year's title game. The Retrievers will then host Penn (Tuesday, 10/15), UAlbany (Saturday, 10/19) and Navy (10/22) before ending the month at Binghamton on Saturday, Oct. 26.
November will feature one home and one road match with UMBC traveling to Vermont on Saturday, Nov. 2 before ending the regular season against Stony Brook at Retriever Soccer Park on Wednesday, Nov. 6.
UMBC finished 16th in total attendance, as 14,806 patrons filled the stands and hill at Retriever Soccer Park in 2018. That number is third-best in the Mid-Atlantic region, just behind national champion Maryland and Virginia. The Retrievers finished higher than perennial powers Michigan State, Clemson, Louisville, Michigan, Akron, Georgetown, UCLA and North Carolina.
The 2018 season marks the sixth time since 2012 that UMBC has been ranked in the top 25 in attendance. The highest the team has been ranked was back in 2015 when they finished 13th nationally. Last year, the Retrievers were 14th as UMBC earned the Top 20 ranking four years in a row from 2012-15.
