Baltimore, Md.-- UMBC men's soccer once again finished the season in the top 20 nationally in both total and average attendance, the sixth time since 2012, proving once again that Retriever Soccer Park is one of the top places to watch college soccer in the country. The Retrievers reached the America East title game for the first time since their magical 2014 run, winning road games at Vermont and Stony Brook before ultimately falling to New Hampshire in the finals.
"We have some of the best fans in the country. Our university, staff and students always show great support. Our athletic department works together with us to provide the best atmosphere and to fill the stand each and every night," head coach Pete Caringi said.
UMBC finished 16th in total attendance, as 14,806 patrons filled the stands and hill at Retriever Soccer Park in 2018. That number is third best in the Mid-Atlantic region, just behind national champion Maryland and Virginia. The Retrievers finished higher than perennial powers Michigan State, Clemson, Louisville, Michigan, Akron, Georgetown, UCLA and North Carolina.
"Lot 17 and our fans are our 12th man on the field. They help provide us energy late in games and they are always loud and engaged throughout the entire match," junior back Jon Bell said.
The Retrievers finished just a spot lower in 17th in average attendance drawing 1,346 fans each during 11 games this year. The figure is better than national powerhouse Stanford who has won three of the last four national titles.
"As Lot 17 president, I take great pride in continuing the tradition of leading one of the best college supporter groups in the country. The outstanding attendance and atmosphere at Retriever Soccer Park has made men's soccer home matches a special event for the student body and community," Lot 17 President David Choi said.
This is the sixth time since 2012 that UMBC is ranked in the top 25 in attendance. The highest the team has been ranked was back in 2015 when they finished 13th nationally. Last year, the Retrievers were 14th as UMBC earned the Top 20 ranking four years in a row from 2012-15.
The Retrievers will close out the spring season with their annual Alumni Game on Friday, April 26.
