Retrievers Six Game Unbeaten Streak Ends in 2-0 Loss to UAlbany on Saturday

Albany, N.Y.— UMBC men's soccer fell 2-0 to the Great Danes on Saturday night, snapping their six game unbeaten streak. The Retrievers fall to 9-5-2, 3-3-0 AE on the year.


How We Got Here:

  • UMBC had a couple of chances early but could not cash in.

  • The Great Danes had a chance in the 10th minute go just wide of the net to keep it scoreless before scoring finally breaking through in the 17th minute.

  • Gino Rossi converted on a penalty kick to put the Great Danes in front 1-0.

  • UAlbany would take a 1-0 lead into the locker rooms, outshooting UMBC 9-4 in the opening 45 minutes.

  • The Retrievers had a flurry of chances midway through the second half, but headers by Matt Bailey (Stevensville, Md./Saints Peter and Paul) and Cesare Marconi (Loano, Italy) were turned aside.

  • UAlbany would add an insurance goal in the 81st minute on a Kaio DaSilva goal off a give and go.


By the Numbers:

  • The Great Danes outshot the Retrievers, 18-14, but the Retrievers outshot UAlbany 10-9 in the second half.

  • UAlbany earned seven corner kicks to the Retrievers five.

  • The Retrievers were unbeaten in their last six games coming into the contest. This is the first loss for UMBC since September 29 when the Dawgs lost 3-0 to Vermont.

  • Marconi led the Retrievers with four shots, while Bailey had both Retriever shots on net.


In Net:

  • Freshman Quantrell Jones (Baltimore, Md./Kenwood) picked up his first loss of the year, making two saves, giving up two goals.

  • Danny Vitiello picked up the win making two saves in the match.


Up Next:

  • The Retrievers will close out the regular season at Stony Brook on Wednesday, Oct. 31. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
