Men’s Soccer Uses Balanced Attack to Defeat George Washington 3-1 on Senior Night

Baltimore, Md.-- UMBC men's soccer sent off their senior class in style with a 3-1 win against the Colonials on Tuesday night. Three different Retrievers scored in the match, capped by senior James Gielen (Edgewater, Md./DeMatha) who netted a penalty kick late in the second half.

How We Got Here:

  • The Retrievers wasted little time, with Cesare Marconi (Loano, Italy) just missing wid on a shot in the first minute.

  • UMBC controlled play for most of the first half, getting on the board in the 12th minute.

  • Marconi stole a pass in the offensive end and put it home in the bottom left corner for his his team leading fifth goal of the year.

  • The Retrievers doubled their lead in the 28th minute with Matt Bailey (Stevensville, Md./Saints Peter and Paul) scoring his fourth of the year.

  • Patrick Jean-Gilles (Woodbridge, Va.) played a beautiful corner kick into the box. Nick Gumbs (Clarksburg, Md./Damascus) got a head on the cross that fell to the feet of Bailey who placed it in the net.

  • UMBC held the Colonials without a shot until the 41st minute, taking a 2-0 lead into the break.

  • George Washington pulled to within one in the 69th minute off a one timer by Dylan Lightbourn.

  • However, the Retrievers wasted little time extending the lead, getting a Gielen penalty kick in the 75th minute to seal the victory.

By The Numbers:

  • UMBC outshot the Colonials 20-4, including 13-1 in the first half.

  • The Retrievers earned nine corner kicks, surrendering just three to GW.

  • 6: UMBC extends their unbeaten streak to six games, winning the last four.

In the Net:

  • Freshman Quantrell Jones (Baltimore, Md./Kenwood) remained unbeaten on the year, going to 6-0-1 on the year. He made three saves on four shots faced.

  • Jason Re picked up the loss for the Colonials, surrendering three goals and making four saves.

Dawg Bytes:

  • The Retrievers honored six seniors who played their final regular season game at Retriever Soccer Park pregame. Saif Arar (Abu Dhabi, UAE), Gielen, Jean-Gilles, Kyle Saunderson (Laurel, Md./Reservoir), David Harris (Waimanalo, Hawaii), and Marshal MacCartney (Chesapeake, Va.) were honored.

  • The team also recognized assistant coach Sam DeBone, who is in his final season on the sidelines for the Retrievers. He has been a part of the staff for 23 years and have coached several goalkeepers who have played professionally.

  • The Retrievers will hit the road for the final two matches of the season, starting with UAlbany on Saturday. Kickoff with the Great Danes is set for 7 p.m.
