UMBC Men’s Soccer Continues Home Stand Against Villanova on Tuesday

Baltimore, Md.-- UMBC men's soccer, unbeaten in their last three, continue their four-game home stand against the Wildcats on Tuesday night. The Retrievers took down Hartford on Saturday in overtime on a Cesare Marconi (Loano, Italy) goal just minutes into the extra frame. UMBC is 2-0-1 in their last three, and are 6-4-2, 2-2-0 AE on the year in a five-way tie for second in the conference.

Scouting the Retrievers:

-UMBC comes into the match at 6-4-2 on the year, unbeaten in their last three matches. Most recently, the Retrievers defeated Hartford 1-0 on homecoming on Saturday night. Cesare Marconi netted the game winner just 3:21 into overtime off a feed from James Gielen (Edgewater, Md./DeMatha) for his team best fourth goal of the year. The Retrievers are now 5-2-1 at Retriever Soccer Park this year.

-Marconi leads the team with four goals and three assists for 11 points. He has taken a team high 44 shots, with 20 going on goal. Gielen, Tre Pulliam (Baltimore, Md./Archbishop Curley), Matt Bailey (Stevensville, Md./Saints Peter and Paul) and Kyle Saunderson (Laurel, Md./Reservoir) all have five points on two goals and one assist. In total, seven different Retrievers have scored a goal.

-In goal, Quantrell Jones (Baltimore, Md./Kenwood) has started the last three matches, posting two shutouts and going 2-0-1 in those contests. He has appeared in five matches, surrendering just two goals (0.42 GAA) making 10 saves (.833 save pct.) with three shutouts.

Scouting the Wildcats:

-Villanova is 6-5-1 on the year, going 1-4-0 in the Big East. Last time out, the Wildcats dropped a 2-1 decision to Georgetown on Saturday. The Hoyas got on the board first early in the second half before Villanova tied it in the 78th minute. The two went to double overtime, where the Hoyas netted the winner in the 106th minute.

-Zach Zandi and Yusuf Cueceoglu lead the team with five goals each and are the only Wildcats with multiple goals, accounting for 10 of the teams 13 goals. Zandi leads the way with 12 points adding two assists to his five goals. Cueceoglu has added an assist for 11 points.

-Carson Williams has played every minute in net for Villanova, giving up 15 goals (1.24 GAA) and making 49 saves (.766 save pct.) with a 6-5-1 record. Williams has posted three shutouts on the year.

All-Time Series:

-This will be just the third meeting between the two schools all-time, with the Wildcats leading the series 2-0. Villanova won the first matchup 3-2 back in 1989, before handing the Retrievers a 5-2 loss last year in Philadelphia.

-Sammy Kahsai got the good guys on the board early in the first half, but the Wildcats tied it late to make it 1-1 at the break. Villanova scored two straight to open the second half to take a 3-1 lead before Tom Paul brought the Retrievers to within one. However, the Wildcats added two late goals to take the match 5-2.
