Retriever Men’s Soccer Returns Home to Face Howard on Wednesday Night

Baltimore, Md.—UMBC men's soccer returns to Baltimore after two straight weeks on the road to take on Howard as part of a double-header with the women who take on Mount St. Mary's at 4 p.m. The Retrievers are coming off a 2-0 defeat to Western Michigan on Saturday in just their second road contest of the year, falling to 4-2 on the year.

Scouting the Retrievers:

-UMBC enters the midweek matchup at 4-2-0 on the year, most recently falling to Western Michigan on Saturday, 2-0. The Retrievers have been shutout in both losses this year. UMBC is 1-1 on the road, but 3-1 at Retriever Soccer Park with the only loss coming to Air Force earlier this month.

-Sophomore Cesare Marconi (Loano, Italy) leads the Retriever offense with three goals and three assists for a team high nine points. He has had a hand in six of the nine goals the Retrievers have scored in 2018. Pulliam is the only other Retriever with double digit goals, netting two with one assists for five points. Jackson Becher (Hummelstown, Pa.), James Gielen (Edgewater, Md./DeMatha), and Kyle Saunderson (Laurel, Md./Reservoir) have also scored for UMBC.

-Sophomore Ciaran O'Loughlin (Birkenhead, England) has seen the majority of action in net, posting two shutouts in four games played. Jones got his first collegiate start last week, making one save in a shutout victory.

Scouting the Bison:

-Howard comes into the matchup with UMBC at 1-3-1, most recently falling to St. Francis Brooklyn 3-1 on Sunday. The Bison won their only game this season in the opener against Bryant, 2-1.

-Victor Guirma leads the Bison offense with three goals for six points. Andres Gomez is right behind him with a pair of goal and one assist. Guirma and Gomez are the only two players to score goals this season.

-Carlos Caro has played every minute in goal for the Bison, giving up 11 goals and making 14 saves on the year.

All-Time Series:

-This will be the 19th meeting in the all-time series with Howard, with the Retrievers leading 14-2-2 all-time.

-UMBC has not lost in the series since 2002, going 6-0-2 in the previous eight matchups. Last year, the Retrievers defeated the Bison 3-0 behind two own goals and Colin Weyant (Perry Hall, Md./Perry Hall) in the 80th minute.
