2017 UMBC Men’s Soccer Season Review

UMBC vs. Maryland

Baltimore, Md. – The 2017 UMBC men's soccer team returned to national prominence both on and off the field.  The Retrievers, playing mostly underclassman were nationally ranked, broke every Attendance Record and played an unprecedented amount of nationally ranked teams while competing in one of the strongest men's soccer conferences in the country.

Record Breaking Attendance:

-The Retrievers finished ranked 14th in NCAA national attendance while averaging a program best 1,616 fans per game. Retriever Soccer Park saw the attendance record broken not once, but twice in 2017.  On August 28th against Howard, 2,873 fans packed the hill to watch the Retrievers down the Bison 3-0.  That record would be shattered weeks later when then No. 1 Maryland came to town.  The Retrievers and Terrapins battled to a 1-1 draw in front of a sold-out crowd of 3,766.

National Ranking:

-For the seventh time in eight seasons, the Retrievers gained a spot in the national polls. UMBC was ranked No. 16 in the Soccer America Top 25 poll in October. 

Nationally Ranked Schedule:

-During a span of two weeks, the Retrievers took on undefeated and nationally ranked No. 1 Maryland, No. 8 Western Michigan, No. 12 New Hampshire and No. 19 West Virginia.  UMBC went 2-1-1 during that stretch.

America East Conference Tournament:

-The Retrievers returned to the conference tournament for the seventh time in eight seasons.  UMBC battled eventual champion Albany on the road to a 1-1 draw before falling in penalties.  Albany went on to defeat Maryland in the First Round of the NCAA Tournament.  The Retrievers defeated both Albany and fellow conference NCAA participant New Hampshire during the season.
