Boston, Mass.—UMBC men's soccer senior Sammy Kahsai (Hyattsville, Md./Northwestern) and freshman Ciaran O'Loughlin (Birkenhead, England) were named America East Co-Player and Rookie of the Week, the conference announced on Monday. Both played integral roles in UMBC drawing No. 3 Maryland on Tuesday (1-1) and defeating No. 12 New Hampshire (1-0) on Saturday.
Kahsai had an assist that set up the game tying goal by Gregg Hauck (Linthicum, Md./North County) against Maryland, while scoring the game winner against New Hampshire on Saturday. The senior midfielder now had five points on the year, scoring two goals and adding one assist.
O'Loughlin helped anchor a Retriever defense that conceded just one goal this week. He stopped 11 of 12 shots faced this week, dropping his goals against average to 1.01. He has made 36 saves on the year with four shutouts to his credit.
The Retrievers are 2-1-1 against ranked opponents this year, defeating then No. 19 West Virginia 3-1 and No. 12 New Hampshire 1-0. The team tied No. 3 Maryland 1-1, while dropping a 2-0 decision to then No. 12 Western Michigan.
UMBC will have the week off before heading to Vestal, N.Y. on Saturday against Binghamton. Kickoff with the Bearcats is set for 7 p.m.
