Baltimore, Md.—UMBC men's soccer junior fullback Kyle Saunderson (Laurel, Md./Reservoir) was named to College Soccer News' National Team of the Week, as announced on Monday. Saunderson helped the Retrievers to a 1-0-1 week, scoring two goals against 19th-ranked West Virginia in a 3-1 win on Wednesday.
Saunderson headed home the second goal of the game (the eventual game-winning score) in the 40th minute off a corner kick from Matt Bailey (Stevensville, Md./Saints Peter and Paul). He would add an insurance marker in the 74th minute off a free kick from Jon Bell (Silver Spring, Md./Richard Montgomery) to seal the victory.
The junior defender leads the team with six points, netting three goals on the year. His other tally came in the season opener against Bryant in the 55th minute of a 1-0 win. He is tied for the America East lead in game-winning goals with two.
The Retrievers are back on the pitch on Wednesday, Sept. 20 when they welcome Navy to Retriever Soccer Park. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
-Head coach Pete Caringi, Jr. recorded career win No. 450 on Wednesday in the team's 3-1 victory against West Virginia. Of those triumphs, 280 have occurred in his 27 seasons at UMBC.
