Washington, D.C.—Senior midfielder Gregg Hauck (Linthicum, Md./North County) scored in the 56th minute after UMBC was trailing 1-0 to force a 1-1 draw against George Washington on Saturday. The Retrievers fell behind after 19 minutes, but earned the draw to move to 4-1-1 on the year.
The Retrievers had a couple of early chances, as Cormac Noel (Todmorden, England) and Sammy Kahsai (Hyattsville, Md./Northwestern) put shots on net, but Thor Arne Hofs made back-to-back saves to keep things scoreless.
In the 19th minute, the Colonials (2-3-1) broke through with a goal from Oscar Haynes Brown who headed in a rebound shot from Christian Lawal to go up 1-0.
Follow the intermission, UMBC came out firing, with senior Tom Paul (Stalybridge, Cheshire, England) getting a shot on goal just 33 seconds in that was turned away. However, the Retrievers would grab the equalizer ten minutes later as Hauck headed home the free kick taken by Colin Weyant (Perry Hall, Md./Perry Hall) and Paul who each got assists on the play.
Both sides had chances in the latter stages of the half, but neither side could break through as the team remained tied after regulation.
The best chance came late in the first ten minutes as Haynes Brown put a shot on target, but Ciaran O'Loughlin (Birkenhead, England) was up to the task, forcing a second overtime.
The only shot of the second extra session came off the foot of Matt Bailey (Stevensville, Md./Saints Peter and Paul), but his attempt was stopped as the teams battled to a 1-1 draw on Saturday.
UMBC outshot the Colonials, 23-16, garnering eight corner kicks in the process. O'Loughlin recorded five saves on six shots, as GW keeper Thor Arne Hofs made nine on the day.
The Retrievers will return to Baltimore on Wednesday, Sept. 20 to kick off a four-game home stand against Navy. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at Retriever Soccer Park.
