Baltimore, Md.-- UMBC men's soccer returns to the pitch after a week off for a Saturday night tilt with Monmouth. The Retrievers dropped a 5-2 decision to Villanova last Saturday with seniors Sammy Kahsai (Hyattsville, Md./Northwestern) and Tom Paul (Stalybridge, Cheshire, England) netting the UMBC goals as the team drops to 2-1-0 on the year.

Scouting the Retrievers (2-1-0):
-UMBC is coming off a 5-2 defeat at the hands of Villanova last Saturday. The Retrievers took an early 1-0 lead off a Sammy Kahsai penalty kick before the Wildcats tied it before the half. Trailing 3-1, Tom Paul netted his first career goal to cut the deficit to one, but Nova added two more goals to win the match.
-Sophomore Colin Weyant (Perry Hall, Md./Perry Hall) leads the team with three points, registering one goal and one assist. Kahsai, Paul and junior Kyle Saunderson (Laurel, Md./Reservoir) each have a goal on the year with Patrick Jean-Gilles (Woodbridge, Va./South County) and Alejandro Arbelaez (Baltimore, Md./Archbishop Curley) tallying an assist.
-Freshman Ciaran O'Loughlin (Birkenhead, England) has started and played every minute in goal for UMBC. He has two shutouts in three games, giving up five goals (1.67 GAA) and making 12 saves (.706 save percentage).
Scouting the Hawks (2-1-1):
-Monmouth enters the weekend tilt at 2-1-1 overall after battling #14 West Virginia to a scoreless draw on Monday. The Mountaineers outshot the Hawks 14-7, but only put three shots on net in the contest.
-Three different Hawks have scored goals in 2017. Geoffrey Schaefer, Colin Stripling, and Andy Martinez have all found the back of the net and lead the team with two points. The only other Hawks with points are Jake Areman and Dan Frisch-Harmon with two and one assist respectively.
-Bobby Edwards has seen all the minute for Monmouth in between the pipes. He has given up just one goal in four games, making 11 saves with three shutouts.
-The Retrievers and Hawks will be meeting for the eighth time in the all-time series, with UMBC holding a commanding 7-0 lead.
-UMBC has outscored Monmouth 25-4 in those meetings, posting four shutouts in seven games.
Last Time We Met:
-The Retrievers took down the Hawks, 3-2 at Retriever Soccer Park last year on Sept. 10. UMBC raced ahead 2-0 in the first half off goals from Tre Pulliam and Sammy Kahsai. The Hawks would tie the match on a pair of goals five minutes apart midway through the second half.
-Christian Morales provided the heroics, collecting a ball 20 yard out, turning and blasting a shot into the bottom corner in the 57th minute.
UMBC in the National Rankings:
-The Black and Gold have started the season on the right foot, winning two of their first three games. Offensively the Retrievers have put pressure on opposing defenses, earning 31 corner kicks in three games. They are averaging 10.33 corners per game, good for second in the nation entering Friday.
-Freshman keeper Ciaran O'Loughlin is 18th nationally in shutouts, recording two clean sheets so far in 2017.
-The Retrievers will return home to take on #14 West Virginia on Wednesday, Sept. 13 at Retriever Soccer Park. Kickoff with the Mountaineers is slated for 7 p.m.
