Scouting the Retrievers:
-UMBC enters the 2017 season after finishing the previous season at 5-9-3, 0-7-0 AE. The Retrievers lost just two starters from a year ago, adding seven newcomers into the fold. The team returns three of the top four goal scorers, including sophomore Tre Pulliam (Baltimore, Md./Archbishop Curley) up top.
-Pulliam led the team in 2016 with four goals and one assist for a team best nine points. Senior Sammy Kahsai (Hyattsville, Md./Northwestern) and junior Patrick Jean-Gilles (Woodbridge, Va./South County) also return after scoring three and two goals respectively.
-The Retrievers will trot out a new goalkeeper this year after the loss of Billy Heavner due to graduation. Redshirt freshmen Tomas Potts (Ellicott City, Md./River Hill) and Huntery Trefny (Centreville, Va./Westfield) along with freshman Ciaran O'Loughlin (Birkenhead, England) are battling to step into the starting role.
Scouting the Bulldogs:
-Bryant was picked to finish fourth in the Northeast Conference (NEC) by the coaches for 2017 after finishing 2016 with a 3-10-3, 2-2-3 NEC record a year ago.
-Junior Nathaniel Brown returns after leading the team in both goals and points last season with three and seven respectively. However the Bulldogs graduated the next three leading goal scorers, returning just four other players to record goals a year ago.
-Nick Stewart saw the most action between the pipes for Bryant last year, starting in all 11 games he played. He recorded 55 saves giving up 21 goals for a goals against average of 1.87.
-UMBC and Bryant will be meeting for the first time on Friday.
-The Retrievers were former members of the Northeast Conference, the conference the Bulldogs are in. All-time, UMBC is 61-34-8 against current members of the league.
-The last meeting between UMBC and a NEC school was back in 2014 when the Retrievers defeated LIU Brooklyn 4-0 to open the season.
