Men’s Soccer Unveils 2017 Home Schedule, Highlighted by Meeting with Maryland at Retriever Soccer Park

Baltimore, Md.—UMBC men's soccer announced the release of the 2017 schedule, which features ten games at Retriever Soccer Park, with four of those contests against nationally-ranked teams from a year ago. The highlight of the schedule is a Tuesday night tilt against Maryland in late September, who was ranked No. 1 nationally for the majority of the 2016 campaign.

"This is by far the toughest schedule we have had in my time here," head coach Pete Caringi, Jr. said of the 2017 slate. "We will be playing two teams who were in the top five nationally last year and several others in the top 20," he continued.

The Retrievers open the season with a pair of home matches and will play three America East contests at RSP. All weekday matches will be played at 7:30 p.m., with weekend contests being played at 7 p.m.

The season kicks off in late August with back-to-back home matches against Bryant (August 25) and Howard (August 28) on Friday and Monday.

September opens with a pair of road matches as the Retrievers travel to Philadelphia to take on Villanova on Saturday, Sept. 2 before heading to New Jersey to take on Monmouth in West Long Branch on Saturday, Sept. 9. UMBC will then welcome the first of their four nationally-ranked teams from a year ago, when West Virginia heads to Baltimore for the first time since 1995 on Tuesday, Sept. 12.

That same weekend, UMBC travels down to George Washington for a Saturday tilt on Sept. 16. The month of September closes with four home matches against Navy (Sept. 20), Western Michigan (Sept. 23), Maryland (Sept. 26) and New Hampshire (Sept. 30). Both Maryland and New Hampshire spent time nationally-ranked, as the Wildcats got to No. 23, while the Terps were No. 1 for most of the year.

The Retrievers hit the heart of America East play in October, traveling to Binghamton (Oct. 7) and UMass Lowell (Oct. 11) to open the month. The River Hawks, the defending America East regular season champs, climbed as high as No. 11 in the national polls last year. UMass Lowell will be eligible for all America East and NCAA Tournaments for the first time in 2017-18.

UMBC then comes home to face defending America East Tournament Champion and nationally-ranked Albany on Saturday, Oct. 14. The Retrievers step out of conference play to take on Delaware at Retriever Soccer Park on Tuesday, Oct. 17.

The final part of the year sees the Retrievers travel to nationally-ranked Vermont (Oct. 21) and Hartford (Oct. 28) before hosting Stony Brook (Nov. 1) on Senior Night.

"The America East finished third in RPI in the country last year, making every conference game this year of vital importance," Caringi said on the state of the conference.
