Philadelphia, Pa.— UMBC men's soccer got back to their winning ways on Tuesday with a big 2-1 win against the Dragons. Freshman Jordan Dove (Gambrills, Md./DeMatha) scored the game winner in the 85th minute to move UMBC to 5-7-3 on the year on his first career goal.
"This was a great win for our guys tonight," head coach Pete Caringi Jr. said after the contest. "We were missing several starters, so I am very happy for the guys to get this win."
The Retrievers struck first in the 25th minute, as senior Christian Morales (Gaithersburg, Md./Frederick) had his first shot get deflected, but collected the rebound and put it in the net for his third goal of the season.
However, just minutes later, the Dragons tied the match up. Xavier Hernanzez collected a misplayed ball by the Retrievers and fired it past Billy Heavner (Landisville, Pa./Hempfield) to make it 1-1 after the first 45 minutes.
The Retrievers peppered Drexel keeper Tyler Afflerback in the second half, but he made three of his eight saves in the stanza to keep things level early on.
That score stood until Dove struck late in the half, taking the corner kick by Cormac Noel (Todmorden, England/Ryburn Valley) and heading it past Afflerbach to lift UMBC to a 2-1 win.
UMBC outshot the Dragons 20-6, putting up ten shots in each half. Heavner made two saves in net for his fifth win of the year. Freshman Colin Weyant (Perry Hall, Md./Perry Hall) and sophomore James Gielen (Edgewater, Md./DeMatha) led the Retrievers with three shots each.
The Black and Gold will host Vermont on Senior Night on Saturday, October 29 at 7 p.m.
