UMBC Battles to 1-1 Draw Against Fordham on Friday

Baltimore, Md.— Sophomore Patrick Jean-Gilles (Woodbridge, Va./South County) put the Retrievers in front early in the second half, but the Rams found the equalizer late in the second half, as both team battled to a 1-1 draw on Friday at Retriever Soccer Park.

Both teams mustered 12 shots, with both goalkeepers stopping four shots.

Jean-Gilles got the scoring started with a strike from 16 yards out in the 51st minute into the top left corner to give the home side an early 1-0 lead.

Junior Gregg Hauck (Linthicum, Md./North County) had great opportunity just minutes later to increase the lead, but his shot went just wide.

The Ram however found the equalizer late in the second half off a one-timer by Cole Stevenson in the 83rd minute.

Fordham came out in the opening 45 minutes with all the action, putting seven three shots on goal, but each time senior Billy Heavner (Landisville, Pa./Hempfield) was up to the task. Heavner had a beautiful save from point blank range early on. Late in the half, the Rams had a free kick just outside the eighteen, but the shot sailed over the crossbar.

The best chance in the opening half came from rookie Colin Weyant (Perry Hall, Md./Perry Hall), who bent a beautifully place ball on net from 35 yards out, but the Ram keeper made the save to keep the score knotted at 0-0 at the break.

The Retriever men will be back in action on Friday, Sept. 2 when they host UNC Wilmington at 7 p.m. at Retriever Soccer Park.
