Baltimore, Md.—UMBC men's soccer gets the 2016 season underway at Retriever Soccer Park with a 7 p.m. matchup with the Rams in the Hampton Inn BWI Kickoff Classic. Last year the Retrievers finished the season at 11-6-3, including a 3-2-2 America East record falling in the conference semifinals to eventual champion Vermont, 2-1 in overtime.

Scouting the Retrievers: 

-UMBC opens the season after going 11-6-3, 3-2-2 a year ago, finishing in a tie for second in the America East. The Retrievers made a return trip to the America East Championships, falling to eventual champion Vermont in overtime, 2-1, in the semis.

-The Retrievers return a slew of all-conference performers in senior Billy Heavner (Landisville, Pa./Hempfield), junior Gregg Hauck (Linthicum, Md./North County), and sophomores Patrick Jean-Gilles (Woodbridge, Va./South County) and Kyle Saunderson (Laurel, Md./Reservoir).

-Hauck is the returning point leader from a year ago, where he had four goals and three assists for 11 points. Jean-Gilles pumped in three goals and an assist for seven points.

-The Black and Gold will play a total of ten matches at the friendly confines of Retriever Soccer Park, including five of the first six matches.

Scouting the Rams:

-The Rams finished 2015 with a 7-8-1 record, going 4-3-1 in A-10 play, falling in the semifinals of the conference tournament to VCU, 1-0.

-Fordham returns their top two scorers in Janos Loebe and his brother Jannik Loebe. Janos tallied five goals and five helpers for a team best 15 points, while Jannik added four goals and three assists for 11 points.

-Both Dan Miklos and Rashid Nuhu return between the pipes, as both men saw significant minutes in net for the Rams. Nuhu made 14 appearances in goal, allowing 20 goals for a goals against average of 1.40. 

All-Time Series:

-The Rams and Retrievers have met just once before, with UMBC coming away with a 4-3 win in New York in 1990.

-The Retrievers will host UNC Wilmington on Friday, Sept. 2 as a part of the Sheraton/Westin BWI Classic at Retriever Soccer Park. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m.
