Boston, Mass.—UMBC men's soccer was voted to finish third in the 2016 America East preseason poll. The Retrievers are coming off an 11-6-3 campaign that saw them finish with a 3-2-2 America East record a year ago. Preseason poll voting was conducted by the conference's eight head coaches, who were not permitted to vote for their own teams.
Defending America East regular season champions Albany earned the top spot in the poll, garnering five first place votes and 47 points total. The reigning America East Tournament champions Vermont finished with two first place votes and 43 points ahead of UMBC who earned the last first place vote with 39 points.
New Hampshire (30 points) was picked to finish fourth, while Binghamton and Stony Brook tied for fifth with 18 points each. Hartford and UMass Lowell rounded out the eight team field with 17 and 12 points respectively.
The Retrievers earned a spot in the America East Tournament last year after finishing in a tie for second place with Vermont. UMBC knocked of New Hampshire, 1-0, in the quarterfinals before falling to eventual champion Vermont in the semis, 2-1, in overtime.
UMBC kicks off the 2016 campaign with a match at Retriever Soccer Park against Fordham in the Hampton Inn/BWI Kick Off on Friday, August 26 at 7 p.m.
