BALTIMORE – The NCAA launched its second annual Elite 89 Fan Favorite contest on Monday, July 13. The contest gives fans a chance to vote for their favorite Elite 89 Award winner from the 2014-15 academic year. Among those award winners is UMBC men's soccer's Billy Heavner (Landisville, Pa./Hempfield).
Voting for the first round of the contest, which will narrow the field from 91 to 30 semifinalists, will run from Monday, July 13 through Thursday, July 16 (8 p.m.). The contest will be conducted on the NCAA's social media channels with the semifinal voting to take place from Monday, July 20 through Tuesday, July 21 and the finals from July 22 through July 23. The winner will be announced on Friday, July 24.
Heavner, who is entering his junior season with the Retrievers' men's soccer team, has maintained a 3.96 GPA in financial economics and was named both the NCAA Elite 89 and America East Elite 18 aware recipient for excellence in the classroom during the NCAA College Cup and America East Championship game, respectively.
Heavner was named the 2014 America East Men's Soccer Scholar-Athlete and to the league's All-Academic Team. The goalkeeper is a four-time UMBC Presidential List honoree for having a perfect 4.00 GPA and is a two-time member of the America East Commissioner's Honor Roll.
