Men's Soccer Announces 2015 Schedule; Retrievers Host a Dozen at RSP

2015 Schedule

BALTIMORE – The UMBC men's soccer program will play nine of 11 games versus non-conference foes at Retriever Soccer Park during their 2015 campaign, head coach Pete Caringi, Jr. announced today.

The three-time defending America East Conference champions and 2014 national semifinalists have a tough road in America East Conference play as four of six October league games occur on the road.

UMBC opens the campaign by hosting the Hampton Inn BWI Classic on August 28 and 30 at Retriever Soccer Park. The Retrievers compete against two foes they have never faced before during the weekend, debuting with Fairfield at 7:00p.m. on the 28th and welcoming Central Arkansas for a Sunday (7:00 p.m.) evening affair.

The Retrievers have faced several Big Ten opponents in their history, but will take on Ohio State for the first time on Friday, Sept. 4 in the opener of The Westin/Sheraton BWI Classic. The Retrievers also face Oakland, welcome a newcomer to the slate at RSP on Sunday, Sept. 6, at 7:00 p.m.

Both the Buckeyes and the Golden Grizzlies made it to the second round of the 2014 NCAA Championships.

UMBC also faces La Salle (Sept. 19), George Mason (Sept. 26), Howard (Sept. 29), Navy (Oct. 20) and Drexel (Oct. 27) at home in 2015. The lone two road encounters are local affairs at Loyola (Md.) (Sept. 12) and GW (Sept. 22).

"It's a very challenging non-conference schedule," said Caringi. "In addition to playing nationally-ranked teams from the region, we will be playing a couple of programs that will be new to our schedule. Fairfield, Central Arkansas, Ohio State, and Oakland, although having never played them, several are coming off NCAA Tournament appearances and will present a great challenge."

The Retrievers open defense of their 2014 America East regular season title when they travel to rival Hartford on Saturday, Oct. 3. UMBC has defeated the Hawks for the league championship at RSP the last two seasons.

The following Saturday, Caringi's crew welcomes Albany for Homecoming '15 festivities in the lone home matinee of the season (2:30 p.m.).

UMBC has road dates at Vermont (Oct. 14), Binghamton (Oct. 24) and U Mass Lowell (Oct. 31) and one home match versus UNH (Oct. 17) in the month of October.

The regular season concludes and UMBC honors its seniors when they entertain Stony Brook on Wednesday, Nov. 4, prior to the six-team America East Championship commencing on Saturday, Nov. 7.

"Each year, the conference has gotten stronger and stronger," Caringi said. "We have had a great run in the last couple of years, but there is not one easy game. I expect the conference to be its strongest since we entered it. Every program will be competing this year in a wide-open chance to win the tournament. Playing four of the seven games on the road will only make it harder for our young group."

Schedule Notes: UMBC finished the 2014 season ranked No. 4 in the final NSCAA and Soccer America polls and were No. 28 in the final NCAA RPI… 2015 opponents George Mason (No. 31) and Ohio State (No. 32) were also ranked in the top 40… 15 of UMBC's 18 games will be played at 7:00 p.m…. The Retrievers have competed against three Big Ten institutions (Maryland, Penn State, Wisconsin)…UMBC will host the Hampton Inn BWI Kick-Off Classic along with Delaware and The Westin/Sheraton BWI Classic with Navy… UMBC will not leave the Maryland-D.C. area for a contest until the conference opener at Hartford on Oct. 3 (Game No. 10)… UMBC finished 28th in the nation in total home attendance last season (11,644 fans/11 games) and the NCAA Second Round game at Maryland, which drew 7,284, was the third-highest attended game in the nation in 2014.
