Men's Soccer Faces First Road Test at Radford on Saturday Evening

UMBC faces its first road test of the year on Saturday, Sept. 14 when the Retrievers take on Radford (1-1-1) at Cupp Stadium in Radford, Va. Kick-off time is set for 6:00 p.m.. Both teams are coming off two-goal victories- UMBC triumphed, 3-1, over St. Francis Brooklyn at home on Sept. 7, while RU defeated Appalachian State, 4-2, at Cupp Stadium on Sept. 10. The two teams played to a 0-0 double-overtime draw at Retriever Soccer Park in August of 2012.

RETRIEVER RECAP:  UMBC (4-0-0) extended its unbeaten streak (dating back to last year) to 13 (10-0-3) with its fourth consecutive 3-1 victory, achieved over St. Francis Brooklyn in the "title game" of the Hampton Inn BWI Classic on Sept. 7. The Retrievers had captured the Springhill Suites Arundel Mills BWI Kick-Off Classic with 3-1 victories over both Seattle U. and UNLV and opened last weekend's play with a 3-1 triumph over Central Connecticut State.

SR F Pete Caringi III (eight goals) was named Most Valuable Player in both tournaments. JR M Geaton Caltabiano, SR M Kadeem Dacres and JR B Oumar Ballo  also earned All-Tournament team honors on Weekend No. 1, while Dacres, Ballo, and junior midfielders Mamadou Kansaye and Stephen Ho were selected for the second All-Tournament team.


-The Highlanders come into the game with a 1-1-1 record on the year.

-Radford opened up their season with a loss 1-0 against the defending Big Ten champion Penn State Nittany Lions.

-In the Highlanders' most recent match on Tuesday, Sept. 19, they defeated Appalachian State, 4-2.  SR F Joe Mayer led the way with 3 goals and an assist.

SR GK Dane Wilson should be in nets for the highlanders, coming in with five saves on the season.SR M Chel Ho Park Kim is second on the Highlanders in points with three, scoring once and adding an assist.


- This will be the 11th meeting between the Retrievers and the Highlanders.

-The Retrievers have a 4-5-1 overall record against the Highlanders and are 2-3 on the road.

-The most recent encounter took place last season at Retriever Soccer Park in the opening game for both teams. The game went into double overtime and ended in a 0-0 tie.

NEXT UP: UMBC returns home to entertain Navy at Retriever Soccer Park on Tuesday, Sept. 17. Kick-off time is set for 7:00 p.m.
