BALTIMORE – Junior goalie Phil Saunders (Perry Hall, Md./Perry Hall) of the men's soccer team was named UMBC's Athlete of the Month for November 2012 in a poll conducted from December 1-10.  Saunders won the vote over swimming and diving's Katie Bean (Mechanicsville, Va./Atlee) and Andrew Eckhoff (Chelmsford, Mass./Chelmsford), men's basketball's Ryan Cook (Laurel, Md./St. Vincent Pallotti/Chestnut Hill College), and volleyball's Mallory McIntyre (Winnipeg, Manitoba/St. Mary's Academy).

In the month of November, Saunders recorded shutouts in each of the Retrievers' four contests, leading the squad to the Second Round of the NCAA Men's College Cup.  In the America East Championships, Saunders did not allow a single goal against Stony Brook and New Hampshire.  In addition, he saved two penalty kicks in the final against UNH en route to being named the America East Championships Most Outstanding Player.

As the Retrievers made their second trip to the NCAA tournament in three years, Saunders continued his stellar play, shutting out Old Dominion and defending champion North Carolina, both on the road.

For the year, Saunders led the America East with a 0.72 goals against average (GAA) while ranking second in saves per game and third in save percentage.
